About Castles - a tour of parts of a castle

The word castle means fort in Latin. Castles were the home of knights and lords. They were built of stone and were built on top of a hill for defense. Big, tall walls were built around the castle. They also built moats around the castle for protection. A moat is big ditch full of water. They used a drawbridge that went up and down to cross the moat. On the top of the walls they had towers for the guards to stand behind for defense. They shot arrows, or dropped stones and  hot water through small open windows or slits.

The lord or knight and his family lived in the safest part of the castle called the keep. The Keep was a tower with very thick walls. The lord and his family lived on the top floors and the servants lived on the bottom floors.

The lord entertained guests and held daily business in the Great Hall. Castles were cold in the winter time and warm in the summer. They built open fires to give some warmth. They were not very comfortable.

Around the castle villages and towns were built.
