Storybooks that help a person understand and appreciate the differences in others are very important in developing lessons of global tolerance of all people.

The following storybook summaries were written by students in Grades one and two.

Where's Our Mama?

This is a tale set in Europe in the early 20th century.

This story is about two kids. Their Mama told them to stay at the train station because they had to wait for her to find her hat. A policeman helped the kids look for Mama. He showed them many different Mamas but none was theirs. Soon the kids found their Mama and were very happy.

We liked this book because it was funny. We would recommend it to other kids because they would enjoy it.

Strega Nona

This is a Ukrainian folktale.

People came to Strega Nona because she could cure a headache, warts, or help the Priest Girls who wanted a husband. She needed someone to help her keep her little house and garden on the town square. Big Anthony offered to help her keep her little house and garden up.

The lady had a magic pasta pot that made pasta if you said the magic words:

"Bubble, bubble pasta pot. Boil me some pasta nice and hot. I'm hungry and it's time to sup. Boil me enough pasta to fill me up."

But Big Anthony did not see her blow three kisses at the pot. One day big Anthony was home alone and said the magic words to the pot. He invited the people in the town to come and eat all the pasta they wanted. Soon the town was covered with pasta and Big Anthony didn't know what to do. When Stega Nona came home she made Big Anthony eat all the pasta in the town.

We think kids will like this book because me and Jessica think this is a good book. I think that people from every country will like it.

Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato

This is an Irish folktale

There was a lazy farmer and his wife. They were very poor. The wife hurt her back. Jamie had to do the planting, watering and digging. He didn't do the work. That night he went to church. On the way he saw a leprechaun making fairy shoes. He snatched him by the coat tails. If you catch a leprechaun you get a pot of gold. This leprechaun tricked Jamie and gave him a potato seed that was supposed to grow into a giant potato. He planted the seed and it grew into a huge potato. It was so huge that Jamie could not dig it out. The people in the town all came and helped him dig it out. The potato went flying down the street and it got stuck in the road. The potato was blocking off all the road. All the people sawed and cut the potato into big chunks and they ate it all winter. In the spring Jamie said to the people that he saved the eye to plant another huge potato. The people all yelled no! They gave him enough food to last him a year.

The Rabbit and the Coyote

This is a Mayan folktale

The story is about Uncle Rabbit and the coyote. Rabbit liked to play tricks on coyote. When coyote came to the big rock he saw Uncle Rabbit leaning against the rock. But Uncle Rabbit told him that the sky was falling. He told coyote to lean against the rock until he went and got a stick. But Uncle Rabbit didn't come back. Next coyote came to a pond and Uncle Rabbit tricked him again. He told him that there was cheese at the bottom of the pond. Uncle Rabbit told coyote to drink all of the water to get the cheese. But Uncle Rabbit ran away again and coyote drank all the water and got the runs.

Stone Soup

This is a French story

Three soldiers were coming home from war. They were in a strange country and they were tired and hungry. They saw a village but the villagers were poor and they were nervous of strangers. The villagers hid all their food. The soldiers asked the villagers for some food and they said no they didn't have any food. The soldiers asked for a place to sleep and the villagers said they didn't have any room. The soldiers made a plan. They decided to make a stone soup. They villagers stared at them. The villagers brought them a huge pot and made a fire. Then they brought water. Then they put in three stones. Next the villagers brought carrots, salt and pepper, cabbage, potatoes and some beef. The villagers thought it was magic to make such a good soup from three stones. Then they added barley and milk. The villagers set the tables and then they made some bread and roast and cider. They ate and then they danced and had a good time. At the end they were very tired and they all went to bed. The soldiers slept in the very beds in town. In the morning they all said goodbye. The villagers said that the soldiers taught them how to made soup from stones. Now they would never be hungry again.

The Korean Cinderella

Long ago in a far place there lived an old man and woman. One day a baby was born. Her name was Pear Blossom. On a cold winter day the old woman died. The old man married another woman. She had a daughter named Peony. The new mother was mean. Peony teased Pear Blossom. Pear Blossom saw a frog in a well. The frog helped her to get water. The birds helped to pick up the rice. The birds pulled the mean mother’s hair. The mother and sister went to a festival and Pear Blossom had to do chores in the garden. The ox helped her pick weeds. She went to the festival afterwards. Her sandal fell into the river. The prince told his men to get the sandal. The prince put the sandal on her foot and they got married. They lived happily ever after.

This is a series of comments student in a Grade 1/2 class wrote after viewing a National Film Board of Canada Video entitled  'Rainbow Wars'.

The video tells the story of the dislike between the Red, Blue, and Gold people. A paint war occurs between all three groups. Something strange occurs during the paint battle that helped resolve the dislike each group had for each other.

Suddenly the people of the red, blue, and gold planets began to realize that when their favourite colour became mixed with another a rainbow of colours was created. One colour created differences between each group. The rainbow of colour created bridges of understanding between each group.

I like to play with people from other places in the world because they are not so bad. They are nice. They don't hurt you. They are the same. It's nice to play with them. They need friends. It's not nice to call other people names that hurt.

Stefania

I like to play with people from other places in the world. I like to play with my friends. If you are bad to your friends you will lose your friends. If you are good to your friends you will make more friends. I like to play with my friends.

Aaron

I have a friend in Dominican. He is French. He is very nice to me. I knew him since I was three years old. I treat him the same way as I treat my Papa. Even if his skin is brown we're all the same inside. He is part of our family. I know him well. He is a very good friend. He works in Fort Royal. He is nice.

Steven

I like to play with people from other places in the world. I like to play with a girl from Romania. She is fun to play with, She is in Grade one. She is nice. I hope Black people are safe. I hope Black people aren't called bad things. I hope our school is safe. I hope everyone in the world is safe. There was a war in Europe. Some people are Red and Yellow. Some people are Black like a person in my class.

Kira

I like to play with people from other places in the world. I like Stefania because she is from Romania. I am from Canada. I like people from other places in the world. I play with my friends. I have fun. My friends are from other places in the world.

Billy

I like to play with people from other places in the world. I like people because they are different and nice. I like Black people because they are nice. I like to have fun with Black people because they are nice. I hope our school is safe. I hope Black people are safe.

Grant

It is fun to play and work with different kids. Knowing different kids is good because different kids are nice to be with so I can learn different languages. I know a song about different people. Red, yellow, black, and white they are all the same inside.

Alyssa

I like to play with people from other places in the world because they are the same as us. I hope we won't have a war again. I like people from different continents. I like playing with my friends like Deven. I don't care if they are different colours.

Marshall

I like to play with people from other places. People from different cultures eat different food. In Mexico they eat Tacos and I like Tacos. In Italy they eat Pizza and speak Italian. In China they eat Rice and they paint their faces for special occasions. In Poland they eat Cabbage Rolls. In Australia they hunt for crocodiles. In Hawaii they wear grass skirts. They also have actives volcanoes. It is fun to play with people from different places.

Matt

To fully understand the diversities of our cultures today children need to learn about the everyday life of past civilizations.  The following is an essay written by a grade 5 student following the investigation into life in Ancient Egypt and Greece.

The History of Egypt

Pyramids

The pyramids of Egypt were built by using a fairly large ramp in which they would walk up to build the pyramid. Around the pyramid is where they would build the ramp. The ramp would take longer to build than the pyramid. When the pyramid was done, it would become the tomb and inside was the special Egyptian. On the tomb walls were pictures to decorate it. In the room of the tombs there was pictures that would represent their daily life in Egypt.

Roads

The roads in Egypt weren’t made out of gravel and cement like ours. Theirs were much different. Their roads were made of dirt. They were very bumpy. Not like ours, some of our roads are bumpy and made of dirt, but they are old.

Mummies

How do you make a mummy? First the dead body would be shipped to you. It was often done at night because it was cooler. The body was bathed. Then it was put out on a high table so they wouldn’t have to bend over. The dead mans brain was removed by inserting a hook - like instrument into his nose to scoop out in little pieces. They had to be careful to not damage the face. When they were don they rubbed them with perfumes and oils to make them smell nice. A copy of "Book of the Dead" which they had written for the after life was laid beside the mummy.

The Nile River

The Nile was a river that ran through Egypt. The Nile would provide clay to build the houses. It was used for water to drink. Egyptian families loved to swim in the Nile. They also loved to row in their boats on it.

The Pharaoh + Government

A Pharaoh was a man who ruled all. Pharaoh means "great house". There were at least four women who became rulers of Ancient Egypt. They were Halshepsut , Nefertiti , Teti-sheri and Cleopatra. The Pharaoh was a god to all Egyptians. He was also known as ruler of Egypt.

Tombs

The tombs were put inside the pyramid. They were put in their own room and decorated with Hieroglyphics. In that same room would be pictures that would represent their daily life in Egypt .

Early Egyptian Family Life

The Egyptians spent most of their live preparing for death. Women had as many rights as men. Children had toys such as dolls, stuff balls, and board games. Pets such as cats , dogs, monkeys, baboons and birds were also kept .
